Russia, which is fulfilling its obligations under the Collective Security Treaty (CSTO), can defend Armenia, but these obligations do not apply to Nagorno-Karabakh.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters:
"The obligations in terms of security are as follows: in the event of any aggression or attack from outside the CSTO member states, the member states of the treaty have a duty to protect that state."
Answering a question about the situation in which the Russian Federation is ready to send troops to the conflict zone in Nagorno-Karabakh, Peskov said that this is due to commitments within the CSTO.
"In the current situation, we are talking about Armenia. Vladimir Putin has made it clear that these CSTO commitments do not apply to Karabakh."
According to him, the information about some military operations in Armenia has not been confirmed.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Armenian leadership did not ask him questions about Russia's fulfillment of obligations to the CSTO. He reminded that the Russian Federation has made commitments to Armenia, a member of the CSTO, and stressed that military operations were not conducted in Armenia
