Among these personalities, the architect and founder of the modern independent Azerbaijani state, great leader Heydar Aliyev has a special place. Heydar Alirza oglu Aliyev was born on May 10, 1923 in Nakhchivan. Having worked in the security system since 1944, Heydar Aliyev served as Deputy Chairman of the State Security Committee under the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR from 1964, and as Chairman from 1967, and was promoted to the rank of Major General.
In those years, he received special higher education in Leningrad, and in 1957 he graduated from the history department of the Azerbaijan State University. At the July 1969 plenum of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Azerbaijan SSR, Heydar Aliyev was elected First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Azerbaijan SSR. Elected a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in December 1982, Heydar Aliyev was appointed First Deputy Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers and was one of the leaders of the USSR. Heydar Aliyev resigned in October 1987 in protest of the political line pursued by the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev.
The next day, Heydar Aliyev made a statement at the Azerbaijani representation in Moscow in connection with the bloody tragedy committed by Soviet troops in Baku on January 20, 1990, demanding the punishment of the organizers and perpetrators of the crime against the Azerbaijani people. He left the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in July 1991 in protest of the hypocritical policy of the USSR leadership over the acute conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. Returning to Azerbaijan in July 1990, Heydar Aliyev lived first in Baku and then in Nakhchivan, and in the same year was elected to the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan. In 1991-1993, he was the chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, deputy chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Heydar Aliyev was elected chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party in 1992 at the founding congress of the party in Nakhchivan. Heydar Aliyev, who was elected Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan on June 15, 1993, began to exercise the powers of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan by the decision of the Milli Majlis on June 24. On October 3, 1993, as a result of a nationwide vote, Heydar Aliyev was elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. He was re-elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the next presidential elections held on October 11, 1998. Heydar Aliyev, who agreed to run in the October 15, 2003 presidential election, refused to run due to health problems. Heydar Aliyev, who was treated for a long time at the Cleveland Clinic in the United States, died on December 12, 2003. From that day, December 12 is the day of remembrance of the national leader of our people, great leader Heydar Aliyev.
