It is also an economic crisis, a development crisis, a humanitarian crisis and a human rights crisis. This has exposed structural inequality and disproportionately affected the most vulnerable members of our societies. The special session provides a historic opportunity for us to come together to defeat COVID-19. With trillions of dollars flowing into the news of vaccinations under approval and a global recovery effort, the international community has had an unprecedented opportunity to do just that.

The two-day special session will include general discussions on December 3 and interactive dialogues with experts, UN agencies and leading scientists on December 4. On the first day of the session, the President of the UN General Assembly, the UN Secretary-General, the Presidents of the Economic and Social Council and the Security Council, the Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement will deliver speeches.
On the second day of the session, there will be a three-panel discussion on the presentation of the Director-General of the World Health Organization, health and humanitarian response, vaccine development and socio-economic recovery.
