"Turkey and Azerbaijan are brotherly countries and our brotherhood has been tested in many situations. In this particular issue, the President of Turkey has openly expressed his strong support for Azerbaijan. "
The statement came from President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in an interview with French newspaper Figaro.
The President said that Azerbaijan is not alone, Turkey is with him:
"This is very strong political support, and we are very grateful for that. This is the first. Secondly, I want to say that we do what we do on the battlefield. Yes, with modern weapons and modern equipment, but it is the Azerbaijani soldiers and officers who liberated our homeland. Our relations with Turkey have a long history and a brighter future. In my opinion, Turkey has a legitimate right to be involved in this process as the only country in the world bordering all three countries of the South Caucasus - Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia.
Because, as a neighbor, as a country that can and will provide stability and security for the region, and has a very clear agenda, it defends international law. International law says that our territories are under occupation. So what is he doing wrong? It simply demands the observance of international law. Armenia does not want to do that. Armenia has been trying to occupy our lands for more than 30 years by illegally resettling Armenians from Lebanon, conducting military operations against Azerbaijanis, and destroying our historical and religious heritage. Turkey's role is very positive. "After the end of the war with Armenia and the implementation of a political settlement, I am confident that Turkey's role will be very important and positive."
