Ali Akbar Velayati, the international relations adviser to Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, said that Armenia should leave the Azerbaijani-occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region.
In an interview with the Iranian Society of Young Journalists, Velayati spoke about the tension between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
"We respect the principle of territorial integrity of countries based on international rules. As a member of the United Nations (UN), we insist on this, especially if the two countries in conflict are our northern neighbors.
Seven cities of Azerbaijan have been occupied. The UN has adopted four resolutions on this issue. All this requires Armenia to leave the occupied territories and withdraw to its international borders.
The province stressed the need for all UN member states to comply with these resolutions:
"We want Armenia to return the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. About one million Azerbaijanis were forced to flee their lands due to the occupation. These people must return to their lands. "
