Experts from the University of Liverpool, University College London, Yale University and the Faculty of Medicine of the Icon have claimed that coronavirus infection can have devastating consequences for the human brain.
According to Gadin.Net, the scientists' research was published in the journal Nature.
Blood flow to the brain is reported to be impaired in 62% of patients with neurological and psychiatric complications infected with COVID-19. At the same time, 31% had symptoms such as mental disorders and prolonged unconsciousness.
According to researchers at University College London, the most common neurological consequences of coronavirus may be stroke and encephalitis. Although respiratory symptoms were not very pronounced in some of these critically ill patients, the main complication was brain injury. Experts have claimed that neurological symptoms can occur in different populations.
"We have seen inexplicable severe mental changes in a relatively young age group without normal risk factors," said Benedict Michael, a neurologist at the University of Liverpool.
According to Fernanda de Felice, a doctor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, more than half of patients with severe COVID-19 may experience neurological complications. However, it is difficult to determine the prevalence of neurological symptoms in people who are asymptomatic or mildly infected due to lack of information.
