The Barbadian government plans to declare the country a republic from 2021. They no longer intend to recognize Queen Elizabeth II as head of state.
According to Qadin.Net, the portal Loop Barbados quoted the statement of the country's Governor General Sandra Mason.
"It's time to put our colonial past behind us. The people of Barbados want to elect their own president. Barbados will take the next logical step towards sovereignty and will be a republic until the 55th anniversary of our independence. "Our country, which gained independence half a century ago, should not doubt its ability to govern itself," he said.
Although Barbados gained independence in 1966, the head of state is still the queen.
