The leading cause of fatal complications from coronavirus has been found
Researchers at the University of Liege in Belgium have found a large number of DNA traps in various parts of the lungs of coronavirus victims. According to scientists, this may be one of the main factors in the serious complications of the deadly disease.
Professor Thomas Marikhal noted that patients who died of another cause did not have a DNA trap in their livers, Qadin.Net reports citing publika.az. According to the professor, it is first formed by immune cells - neutrophils and acts as the body's first line of defense. These cells have the ability to release their own DNA during netosis, a specific form of cell death. However, excessive activation of this process leads to tissue destruction.
Scientists have found traces not only in lung tissue and respiratory tract, but also in blood vessels. They are fibrin-rich clots that cause thrombosis and damage. It was found that all this is the result of uncontrolled activation of the immune system, which leads to a storm of cytokines.
"Combating the excessive release of DNA traps is an additional way that can be effective in reducing the severity of complications from COVID-19," the expert added.
Specialists are currently studying the effects of netoz on other organs, including the heart. It has already been suggested that this process can be reduced with advanced drugs, such as in the treatment of cystic fibrosis.
