Significant reduction in passenger traffic - STATISTICS
In January-August 2020, freight and passenger traffic in Azerbaijan decreased by 18.3 percent and 35.2 percent, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
According to the report of the State Statistics Committee, in the first 8 months of 2020, 126.2 million tons of cargo were transported by economic entities operating in the transport sector.
3.1% of cargo was transported by sea, 7.6% by rail, 0.2% by air, 58.8% by road and 30.3% by pipeline.
In January-August 2020, the carriers served 844.4 million passengers.
92.1 percent of passengers were transported by road, 7.7 percent by subway, and the rest by other modes of transport.
During January-August 2020, 9.6 million tons of cargo and 1,531.6 thousand passengers were transported by rail, a 0.5 percent increase in freight transportation compared to the same period in 2019, and 30 percent in passenger transportation. There was a 9 percent decrease.
On average, 309 wagons were loaded and 382 unloaded per day. During the day, 13,800 tons were loaded in the northern direction, 3,700 tons in the western direction and 0,800 tons in the southern direction.
The volume of cargo transported by sea in January-August 2020 amounted to 3 million 939.9 thousand tons, a decrease of 3.6 percent compared to the same period last year. 32.4% of the cargo was oil cargo.
During the period, the number of passengers transported by this mode of transport increased by 7.4 percent compared to the same period in 2019 and amounted to 14,600 people.
In the transport sector, 74.1 million tons of cargo and 777.7 million passengers were transported by road, which is the largest share in the volume of transportation, and a decrease of 26.9 percent and 32.3 percent, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
96.3% of passengers used the services of buses and 3.7% used the services of taxis.
Freight turnover decreased by 45.2 percent and passenger turnover by 28.8 percent. The number of passengers using the services of metro transport decreased by 57% to 64.7 million.
491,300 or 73.5 percent less passengers were transported by air, 99.5 percent by public and 0.5 percent by private enterprises. Cargo transportation by this mode of transport increased 2.2 times and amounted to 277,000 tons.
In order to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection, the number of passengers in March, April, May, June, July and August of this year was significantly reduced due to the impact of restrictions on citizens' travel between regions and cities of the country.
