Sage time
September is usually a month known for its apple generosity, but great foods like bell peppers and sage also peak this month.

One cup of chopped bell pepper contains 30 calories, 3 grams of fiber, and 200 percent of the daily recommended dose of vitamin C. It also contains at least 10 percent of the recommended daily amount of vitamins A, K, and B6. Better still, red peppers contain more beta-carotene than green peppers and are also a higher source of vitamin E.

Sage is another wonder of September. This perennial herb is native to the Mediterranean. One tablespoon of fresh sage contains only 6 calories and is rich in vitamin A, calcium, iron and potassium.

Shopping tip: Choose fresh sage that has a strong aroma and bright color. For storage, wrap it in a paper towel and place in a resealable plastic bag for about 4-5 days.

Green beans are also ideal for consumption in September. One cup of raw green beans contains about 30 calories and 15 percent of the recommended daily intake of fiber. Green beans are also a rich source of vitamin K and C and have at least 10 percent of the daily recommended amount of vitamin A, folate, and manganese.
