İron deficiency
Iron is an essential mineral. It is a major component of red blood cells. Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies in the world, affecting more than 25 percent of people worldwide. This number rises to 47 percent for preschool children. Unless iron-rich or iron-fortified foods are offered, you will most likely be iron deficient.
About 30 percent of menstruating women may suffer from monthly blood loss and 42 percent of young pregnant women may suffer from iron deficiency. Also, vegetarians and vegans are at higher risk of deficiency as they consume plant-based iron. The most common consequence of iron deficiency is anemia, in which the number of your red blood cells and your blood's ability to carry oxygen is low. Symptoms are usually fatigue, weakness, weakened immune system and impaired brain function.
You should never supplement with iron unless you really need it. Too much iron can be very harmful. Vitamin C in particular may increase the absorption of iron. Eating iron-rich foods, along with vitamin C-rich foods such as oranges, cabbage, and bell peppers, can help you maximize your iron absorption.
Iodine deficiency
Iodine is an essential mineral for normal thyroid function and production of thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones play a role in many bodily processes such as growth, brain development and bone health. They also regulate your metabolic rate.
Iodine deficiency is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies affecting about a third of the world's population. The most common symptom of iodine deficiency is an enlarged thyroid gland, also known as goiter. It can also cause an increase in heart rate, shortness of breath, and weight gain. Severe iodine deficiency can lead to serious harm such as mental retardation and developmental abnormalities, especially in children.Because iodine is mostly found in soil and ocean water, soils poor in iodine result in low iodine foods. Some countries require that table salt be fortified with iodine, which successfully reduces the incidence of deficiencies. The practice of enriching salt with iodine is also carried out in our country.
